The Ten Thaats
The Ten Thaats
In this PDF you'll find all the ten thaats written down in a comprehensible and accessible way. In one page you have them all.
What is a thaat?
Thaat can be translated to scale, like a parent scale of which ragas belong to. It's a system that was invented to classify ragas and group them into scales. A theory by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. The rules are: it has two be 7 notes, same up and down the scale, from Sa to Sa. Cannot contain any half steps (like komal Re and shuddha Re one after another). We have 12 notes all together and if you're good at math you might be thinking, that actually gives us 32 possible thaats. It's correct, but Bhatkhande decided to boil it down to only 10 and they cover most of the ragas. The 10 thaats are named by the most popular raga belonging to that particular thaat.
Practice them all and use them as a base for your alankars and scale pratice.
Enjoy!
